are the diet basics? |
The basics of healthy eating and dieting is a balanced diet, containing foods from all the food groups. It should also be low in saturated fats and low in refined sugar. A person needs fats and carbohydrates but not saturated fat or refined sugar. Saturated fat and refined sugar are causing our diet and weight problems.
Your diet basics should include good nutrition which is rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. Good carbs, like vegetables, fruit, potatoes, whole wheat bread, pasta, rice, oats, beans, soy and whole grain cereals, provide good nutrition. Vegetables and fruit, in particular, contain a range of phytochemicals, enzymes and other micronutrients that are essential for efficient metabolism and a healthy diet.
There are some good fats if eaten in reduced amounts. These are from monounsaturated or polyunsaturated food sources, rather than animal fats. Since fat contains more than twice the calories of other foods, it should be eaten in reduced quantities if you want to lose weight. When you eat animal foods, you should choose lean, lower fat foods. Good food shopping and changing our cooking habits will lead to a healthier way of eating and great diet basics.
